Course Aims

All SBC courses are written and delivered to primarily teach the English language through the study of a subject itself. In these courses, teaching English and teaching the subject is integrated together, so that you will learn both at the same time. This language learning methodology is called Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and it is employed across all SBC courses.

Objectives

All of our subject courses have the following four objectives:

  • Communication: Studying through a communicative and collaborative approach to learning, with the aim of improving English language proficiency.
  • Content: Improving the knowledge of the subject (e.g. Medicine, International Relations, etc.)
  • Cognition: All courses at SBC focus on developing 21st Century Skills, such as critical thinking skills, collaborative skills and presentation skills.
  • Culture: All courses include the cross-cultural benefits of studying in a multi-national environment.

How Does Learning a Language and Learning a Subject at the Same Time Work?

Our Tutors are trained to help you improve your English Language proficiency, as well as knowledge of the subject itself. In our lessons, we will teach you how to use English to communicate, collaborate, research and present. As all our courses use collaborative research projects to help you learn, all of your interactions will be in English. At the same time, the thematic focus will be on the subject itself. So, in Medicine for example, we will focus exclusively on Medicine as the subject of the class. In this course you will explore a range of areas, from Pathology and Anatomy to emergency medical response.

Do I Need a Minimum English Language Level For Subject Courses?

Students of every level, from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (B2), are catered for on our General English Courses. For the EFL CLIL courses, the minimum level required is Intermediate (B1). We will give you a placement test to make sure you have the required minimum level.

As part of our ongoing accreditation, all SBC Teachers and Tutors adhere to the British Council Accreditation Scheme qualifications and experience guidelines for the teaching of English.

Developing Lifelong Skills

Across all SBC summer schools, we seek to develop transferable skills that will prepare our students for success in their future academic and professional lives. As part of this initiative, each student will participate in our Time to Shine programme which follows two different formats:

1. Time to Shine at SBC Oxford

At SBC Oxford, our courses assist children in developing key learning and communication strategies, including:

  • The ability to work creatively with others
  • Build confidence in communicating clearly
  • Improve social and cross-cultural skills
  • Develop effective problem-solving and teamwork skills

To develop these skills and ignite creativity in our SBC Oxford students, twice-weekly all students will participate in our Time to Shine lessons. These comprise a series of dynamic and interactive challenges, for students to complete in a practical setting. Through our innovative and highly social Time to Shine lessons, students are encouraged to exchange ideas, collaborate, show initiative and improve their confidence, all whilst having fun.

 

2. Time to Shine at our Summer Schools, Academies & Colleges

At our summer schools, academies and colleges, alongside developing knowledge through improving English language proficiency, we aim to develop these transferable skills further. Each week all our English Through Academic Subject courses have a bespoke Time to Shine research and presentation project, which encourage students to develop the following skills:

  • Expert Thinking & Innovation
  • Communication & Collaboration
  • Life & Career Skills
